Being ready for a blackout takes thought and preparation. Here is what you need to know to be prepared for a power outage.
Be Ready for Power Surges
When utility companies are working to restore power after a blackout, the power grid is unstable. Power surges may result and your electronics are at risk. If a blackout hits, unplug and switch off all electronics. Leaving one light turned to the “on” position is a good idea to alert you when the power is restored.
Be Prepared for a Power Outage With Solar Lighting
If you have any solar lights used for landscaping, then you have an excellent resource for lighting during power outages. Bring solar lights inside your home. This saves flashlights and their batteries for specific tasks requiring brighter lighting. Solar lights are also safer than candles because they can’t start a fire. Put the solar lights outside during the day to recharge.
Keep the Freezer Closed
The contents of your freezer may not be a total loss after a power outage. Keep the freezer closed during a blackout because food can stay cold for up to two days.
Fill the Bathtub During a Power Outage
Another great tip when you lose power is to immediately fill bathtubs, buckets, and sinks with water. Municipal water may stop working during an extended blackout. Gathering water right away makes sure you’ll have water for washing and household tasks.
Use the Garage Door Release Mechanism
You can still operate your garage door during a power outage. Most garage doors have a cord that hangs from the connector arm. When the door is closed, pull on the cord. This disconnects the garage door and lets you lower or raise the door manually.
Be Prepared for a Power Outage With CO Detectors
Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless deadly gas that is produced by combustion appliances and fires. Inspect the carbon monoxide detector in your home and make sure the batteries are working. Don’t use grills or generators indoors or in the garage, especially during power outages, as this can lead to the buildup of carbon monoxide.
